Building projects in rural Alaska, off the road system, takes a strong understanding of Alaska’s infrastructure and an understanding of logistics.
Cornerstone’s professional management team and crew of highly skilled employees are crucial to our success at remote job sites. We have a core of project managers and superintendents with experience planning and implementing construction at remote sites. They understand the many challenges inherent in projects in isolated locations off the Alaskan road system, and are able to pool their collective expertise to complete projects in remote locations efficiently, on time, and with high quality.
Our onsite crew is made up of people who are adaptable, tough, resilient and innovative – and who take pride in getting the job done, and doing it right.
Local Resources
In remote construction project we will, determine if the existing resources are available to support the construction efforts early. We also reach out to the local community either through our client or by visiting the site and meeting with the village elders as appropriate. Working with the local community brings dividends and we work hard to ensure that our construction efforts meet the community’s expectations and wherever possible, we accommodate local needs.
Logistics
Every item that is needed, from a nail to a jackhammer or even a Band-Aid, must be ordered months ahead of time to coordinate transportation to the project. Often there is only one barge and if you don’t make it, you’ve missed not only the boat but quite possibly the construction season. Timing and logistics are art forms in Alaska construction. River barges can only access certain areas during a specific time period in summer. Where local labor is being used, work schedules must be adjusted for seasonal subsistence activities and, of course, mobilizing personnel to the site and back can be challenging.
Safety
When working in a remote location, establishing safety protocols, ensuring worker training, research on safety items and options including medical evacuation becomes paramount. In addition, establishing a relationship with the local clinic and healthcare workers are important to the overall operation of the project. We attempt to anticipate all safety considerations and implement a plan to address these issues before we show up at a project. |
